Abstract

We analyze the educational structures known as Student Chapters (SC), particularly at the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, and their influence on the academic training of future geologists. SC represents the academic arms of various American professional associations, sponsored by numerous multinational companies. They have a pyramid structure and are aimed to provide additional training to students on specific subjects, with special emphasis on the student-company relationship. These activities are paralell to the clases, have no university control.
The ultimate goal is to train students next to graduate under a mercantilist logic, naturalizing the link between universities and multinational companies. Moreover, these structures create a sense of belonging which in many cases, is opposed to the sense of belonging to a public institution.
