Jose Leite Lopes (1918-2006) was a Brazilian physicist internationally recognized for his many important contributions in the field of theoretical physics. He collaborated in the creation in 1949 of the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF), the first research center in theoretical physics in Latin America; of the National Nuclear Energy Commission; of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Financier of Studies and Projects (Finep). In 1969, accused by the Brazilian dictatorship of participating in a "communist conspiracy", he was kicked out of the CBPF and went into exile in the United States, but after that country's collaboration with the 1964 military coup became evident, he moved to the Université Louis Pasteur, in Strasbourg, France. He returned to Brazil in 1986 and became director of the CBPF.
