The Laboratorio de Hemoderivados de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba is a public company, which belongs to a national university. Since 1968 fulfils an important social function as a provider of first-class and low-cost pharmaceutical products for the country and the region. It is an example of how a non-profit state institution, with a strong social commitment, can reach high levels of quality, self-finance and grow, to become the largest in Latin America. This article addresses the main characteristics of this company and, in contrast, exposes the abusive nature of pharmaceutical multinationals, which set exorbitant prices for their products, or directly do not manufacture them if they are not profitable. The need for state production of medicines to be framed and promoted globally within a national public health program run by the State is also pointed out.
