Abstract

Latin America is one of the most privatized regions of the world in university matters. Both,  for the distribution of enrollment and for having, in most countries, more than 70% of universities belonging to the private sector. The privatization and commodification processes in Latin America have acquired enormous expansion in the last decades. In this scenario, Argentina is presented as an exception with a public-state system, which in recent years has been subject to strong tensions. This article synthesizes the first results of a research project on these topics. On the one hand, it presents a regional panorama and the main trends regarding the privatization and commercialization of the university. On the other hand, the Argentine case and its particular characteristics are analyzed. It is concluded that the public university in Latin America is strategic in the possibility of promoting social processes oriented by a horizon of social justice.
