The end of Tierra del Fuego?

This article analyzes the dispute over the future of Tierra del Fuego, the scene of a successful but threatened process of structural change. It is argued that industrial promotion not only reconfigured the province’s productive and social profile, but also acted as a platform for the construction of an institutional and scientific-technological system that would not have existed otherwise. In contrast, fiscalist and reductionist narratives propose dismantling the industrial subregime, but their analyses fail to mention that this would not only affect production and employment, but also the institutional framework and the national strategy for the South Atlantic. It is concluded that the experience of Tierra del Fuego is not a “cost” to be reduced, but a model to be expanded, and therefore it is necessary to explore ways to replicate the experience in other neglected regions of the country.
