The Bariloche Foundation's Model for Latin America

This article explores the history of computerized planning in Latin America during the 1970s, focusing on two initiatives developed by the Bariloche Foundation: the Latin American World Model (1971-1977) and the Model for Latin America (1973-1977). Through the analysis of unpublished documents from Carlos Mallmann's personal archive, the institutional and intellectual tensions that marked these projects are reconstructed. The Model for Latin America faced significant obstacles, including conflicts among its academic leadership, funding limitations, political resistance (particularly from Brazil) and institutional discontinuities that doomed it to oblivion. This truncated experience offers a privileged window to examine the structural challenges faced by development alternatives in the region and underscores the importance of preserving Latin American documentary heritage, a fundamental aspect for rethinking contemporary development agendas.
