Diploma in History of Science in Argentina and Current Debates
Diploma in History of Science in Argentina and Current Debates
The Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (FCEyN-UBA) is one of the main centers of higher education and scientific research in our country, both for its institutional and academic trajectory and for the volume of graduates it produces in its disciplinary fields and for the quality of its training. In addition, the FCEyN has twenty-one research institutes, in which it concentrates about 10% of the people engaged in research in science and technology within the scope of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), a fact that positions it as one of the main centers of the country in terms of production and transmission of knowledge.
With this background scenario, the diagnosis on which the creation of the present Diploma Course is based has two aspects: on the one hand, a previous examination verified the lack of consolidated instances of training, reflection and problematization on the history of scientific and university institutions and the role they play in Argentine society. On the other hand, in recent years, various groups of students, graduates and professors of the University of Buenos Aires have occasionally carried out critical training courses on the link between scientific activity, public policies and development models. These activities bring together researchers, professors, lecturers, teachers, graduates and students of this University, showing a latent interest in the subject.
In addition, the FCEyN has historically been a source of thought in its area of knowledge. The Program "Latin American Thinking on Science, Technology and Development" (PLACTED), counted with the participation of researchers and teachers of the institution, resulting in their work of great relevance for discussions and research on science policy.
In view of the above, this Diploma seeks to position itself as an instance of complementary, open and free training that provides theoretical and practical tools for reflective training on the relationship between scientific and university research practices; the Argentine political, cultural and social context; and economic development models.
