This article analyzes the different conceptual approaches to the role of the university in society and, within this framework, explores the different profiles and trends in the development of links between higher education institutions and other social agents. Referenced in the experiences of some Argentine universities, basically three linking profiles are identified: the traditional model of university-business links, the model of socio-productive links, and the model of territorial links. These profiles determine the objectives, the actors with whom they interact, the form of linking and the different linking practices.
