Healthcare Waste Management at the Universidad de la República

Regarding the management of sanitary waste at Udelar, each University Service that generates this type of waste is responsible for its respective management. In terms of training and education programs, students in the Health Sciences area at Udelar do not have courses related to the management of sanitary waste generated during their professional activities. On the other hand, until 2023, teachers and Technical, Administrative, and Service staff were offered the course “Intra-institutional Management of Sanitary Waste at Udelar” under the University Environmental Management Program (PGAU), aimed at teachers and Technical, Administrative, and Service staff. This work presents a case study on the diagnosis of sanitary waste management at the Hospital de Clínicas “Dr. Manuel Quintela.” As part of this diagnosis, the waste generated in different areas of the hospital was characterized qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the results obtained from this diagnosis, it can be affirmed that the practices surveyed related to intra-institutional management hinder the proposal of national generation rates of healthcare waste (RAS), despite having observed certain relationships of interest. Furthermore, management protocols were developed, from which training manuals were created to be used in relevant training instances during the implementation processes of the protocols in the hospital.
